CHAI SCHOOL
FOLLOWING THE EXCITEMENT OF THE BAR/BAT MITZVAH YEAR, many of our students continue on with their Jewish education. Students in grades 8 - 10 attend our Livnot Chai School which takes place on Tuesday evenings.
For students in grades eight and nine, Livnot Chai School consists of small units of study relating to social justice. Students learn how their day-to-day actions affect those around them, and use parts of the Tanach to understand and support their actions. In addition, we address current topics which might occur in their everyday lives, both at school and in the community. Building/repairing our community can only happen if we are building/repairing ourselves in the process. The weekly program contains an experiential component, taking monthly field trips into the community, connecting text-based learning to civic engagement. Organizations we are currently looking at include:

Crossroads Rhode Island (homelessness)
Serve Rhode Island

DURING THE CONFIRMATION YEAR, our students join other Jewish students from throughout the country by participating in the L’Taken weekend which takes place in Washington DC. During this weekend, students work with members of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) group learning how to advocate for causes of interest to them. RAC is an important Jewish organization which educates and mobilizes the community on legislative and social concerns. Our students will meet with their state representatives and senator to voice their concerns and ask for support for issues of importance to them. This is valuable training for each of us as U.S. citizens, understanding the importance of giving voice to our concerns so that they may be heard by our government leaders in Washington.
Confirmation takes place on the holiday of Shavuot when we celebrate the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people. Our students share in the leading of the service and reflect on the importance Judaism has had in their lives.
