Save the Date - Commemoration of Kristallnacht

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 7:00PM

Commemoration of Kristallnacht - The Night of Broken Glass. Fred Buff , father of congregant Alan Buff , will speak about his experiences growing up in Germany in the 1930's, the events leading up to Kristallnacht and his attempt to escape Nazi Germany aboard the SS St. Louis.  The journey of the St. Louis became known as The Voyage of the Damned, as the passengers' Cuban visas were revoked just hours before landing in Havana.  Despite efforts by politicians and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, the United States would not allow the ship to land in Florida.  The ship returned to Europe in a dramatic publicity coup for the Third Reich.  Just hours before arriving back in a German port, four European countries were convinced to accept a portion of the 936 refugees.  Fred was one of the 214 passengers who disembarked in Belgium, eventually making his way to England where he waited for approval to emigrate to the U.S.

Temple Habonim is delighted to have Fred Buff speaking, and all are invited to attend.

Adult Learning Can Be Lots of Fun!

Advance Adult Study / Adult B'nai Mitzvah / Hebrew

Now is the time! Wed, Nov 4 - 6:30PM

Are you interested in learning or relearning Hebrew? Do you want to know more about Judaism and what our religion is all about? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, you will be happy to hear that in November Temple Habonim will begin year one of a two year course of study which will culminate in a B'nai Mitzvah service in the spring of 2011.

We already have a group of eleven people who are interested in and have registered for our Adult B'nai Mitzvah Class. The class will meet 2 or 3 Wednesdays a month from 6:30PM to 8:00PM (or 8:15PM - to be determined by participants), beginning November 4, 2009.

The first 45 minutes of each class will be for learning (or relearning) Hebrew, and the second half of the evening will be devoted to different aspects of Judaic studies. You may choose to study only Hebrew or participate in the entire course of study. The choice is yours, and the curriculum is being developed with input from class members.

This class is for all adults whether or not you have already become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah . Even if you participated in this ritual as a teen, the class will provide opportunities for advanced learning, to re-commit and re-connect, not to mention a chance to chant Torah again.

The fee for the course is $180.00 per year. As always, the fee should not be a deterrent for anyone who is interested. Please talk to Rabbi Klein and/or Linda Silverman Levine (team teachers for the class) to register or for additional information.
