L to R: Speakers at the ground- breaking ceremony were Rabbi Rosenberg; A. Larry Berren, Temple Habonim President; Harold Foster, Immediate Past President; Jeffrey Brier, representing the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island; The Reverend Ed Farrell- Starbuck of the United Methodist Church of Barrington; and, Robert Kemp, Chairman of the Temple's Building Expansion Committee

On Sunday, August 18, at the synagogue on New Meadow Road in Barrington, approximately 120 members of Temple Habonim attended a groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of their building expansion effort. The long range planning for the expansion actually began over 5 years ago, when temple leaders realized that more space would be required to accommodate the congregation's growth. "Habonim is Hebrew for 'the builders,'" said Rabbi James Rosenberg, "and the time has come for us to build again."

After a survey of the Temple's members, the Board of Trustees determined that the synagogue needed to improve its classroom and educational facilities and also to enlarge the temple's sanctuary to accommodate its 200 member families for worship services. The New Meadow Road building, remodeled in 1980, was designed to respond to the varied needs of the Temple Habonim community; the design for the new addition was developed to maintain this flexibility. The final plan will feature over 5,800 square feet of additional space on two levels including an outdoor terrace that will we be used for a wide variety of educational events and celebrations. Final completion of the expansion is scheduled for August 2003, with minimal disruption to the existing building's 'footprint' during most of the early construction phases.

Adding their rhythmic melodies to the crunching beat of the steamshovel outside
